Description
Oran will host the 16th International Liquefied Natural Gas Conference (LNG16) from April 18 to 21, 2010. This is a major event which will constitute a new opportunity for Algeria to reaffirm its place in the global gas market in general and LNG in particular. Since the beginning of the 1960s, our country has occupied a pioneering position in the development of the LNG industry.
Indeed, the first LNG plant in the world was built in Algeria, more precisely in Arzew (Oran), more than 40 years ago and where the first commercial gas cargo destined for Great Britain was loaded.
The oldest gas liquefaction complex is still in operation and today produces 2 million m3/year of LNG and 18,150t/year of butane.
Algeria, which has significant natural gas resources, combined with a mining area under exploration, constantly occupies the leading positions in the field of gas exports and remains determined to strengthen its capacities to supply the international market.
The Algerian experience accumulated in the development and exploitation of gas fields, in the pipeline transport and maritime transport sectors makes it possible to meet the needs of new markets which are developing at a very rapid pace.
After having hosted LNG4 in 1974 in Algiers, our country is hosting this event in Oran, the second city in Algeria. Most of the hydrocarbon transport, processing and export facilities are located in this city which has become an essential economic hub for several years.
With its multiple socio-cultural facets, its historical heritage, its archaeological sites, Oran will welcome its illustrious guests and offer the best conditions so that this global forum is a success.
