Description
A fruit tree of the plum genus (Prunus armeniaca), the apricot tree belongs to the Rosaceae family. Native to Asia, it is a tree reaching 4 to 6 m in height, with reddish-brown bark, spreading or straightened branches, covered with oval, smooth and heart-shaped leaves.
Its multiplication is done by escutcheon grafting. Rootstocks are obtained by sowing the cores, layering or cuttings. The apricot tree is a tree adapted to dry and hot situations.
It is very sensitive to spring frosts which often disrupt flowering and fruit set. It fears heavy and humid soils which cause root asphyxiation.
Light, warm and permeable soils suit it perfectly. It adapts to moderately calcareous soils.
The varieties of its fruits do not ripen at the same time, their harvest taking place from the beginning of June to mid-August. Apricots are consumed either in the form of fruit or processed into jam, fruit in syrup or nectar.
