Description
The momentum for economic recovery driven by the Algerian state, once independence and peace had been regained, was accompanied by the revival of agriculture with the long-term objective of achieving food self-sufficiency.
The Algerian state abolished the sadly remembered colonial practice of khemassat by restoring dignity to the fellah.
Among the new objectives, the transformation of traditional agriculture into a cooperative system in order to improve the standard of living of farmers.
This conviction opened the way to the nationalization of land and its distribution into agricultural cooperatives.
The implementation of the agricultural plan aims to train agricultural work executives and technicians as well as agronomic engineers, the start of the reconversion of the vineyard, a vast program of intensification of breeding to increase the number of the herd, in particular the sheep herd which had decreased by 50% during the war.
The strengthening of the veterinary service for optimized livestock maintenance has enabled the treatment of infectious diseases, particularly foot-and-mouth disease, by carrying out 320,000 vaccinations.
The administration of the socialist agricultural sector by the Agrarian Reform Office covers 2,300,000 ha.
This sector employs 120,000 permanent agricultural workers and 100,000 seasonal workers.
