Description
Prickly Thuja Callitris articulata (Arabic: ar’ar)
From the Cupressaceae family, the prickly thuja or Articulata or Callitris quadrivalvis or Tetra clinis articulata or Thuya articulata is a monoecious tree with very slow growth, often bushy, sprouting stumps.
Its branches are flattened, articulated, with opposite leaves appearing whorled in fours, long fused to the stem.
The cone is subglobose, tetragonal, glaucous, pruinose with four cordiform valves, provided at the top with a flat and reflexed appendage.
It prefers low mountains and dry hills.
It is abundant west of Algiers.
Thuja provides a natural resin called sandaraque which contains various acids and essence.
These materials are used for the preparation of varnishes and the glazing of paper in particular.
