Description
It is a small tree with a bushy habit of the Rosaceae family, 4 to 5 m high, cultivated for its fruits, quinces in this case.
The quince tree is a very ancient cultivated fruit tree, with downy leaves and large solitary flowers which bloom late in May. Its multiplication is mainly done by layering or by bud grafting. Dry cuttings are possible.
The quince tree resists winter cold and spring frosts well. It fears the heat and drought of summer which slow down the growth of the fruits. It thrives in fresh, light soil and fears limestone soils.
Its fruits are harvested when fully ripe, when the down that covers them is removed by friction. Its production is used in jam and confectionery (fruit paste).
