Description
Hemp-leaved eupatory (Eupatorium cannabinum) is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family.
The hemp-leaved eupatory is a perennial plant, 60 cm to 120 cm high, with an erect, simple or branched stem, often reddish, streaked and pubescent.
The flowers are purpurine or white, usually there are 5 flowers per flower head. The flower corolla is glandular. Flowering from June to July. The black, glandular fruits are achenes with a white pappus.
The hemp-leaved eupatory grows in humid places in high mountains. It is found quite rarely in the woods of Djurdjura, Babors, Guerrouch and the Tlemcen mountains.
The flowers and roots of this plant are recommended to alleviate liver or kidney problems. However, it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids which are toxic in high doses or with prolonged use.
