Description
Mineral wealth has always been the foundation of the development of human society. Already in prehistoric times, man used stones as tools. Since then, interest in useful minerals has only grown, so much so that today, more than 90 elements are discovered and consumed. Among these elements, two particularly stand out: firstly, gold, known since the Neolithic and exploited from the sixth millennium, is the noblest of metals. Then iron, because it is the most widespread in nature, but also one of the oldest elements used in industry.
In Algeria, the soil and subsoil have significant potential in mineral resources known since ancient times. But it was not until the end of the 19th century that important discoveries were made, mainly in the north of the country, including the iron deposit of Jebel Ouenza.
After independence, the major financial effort made for modern knowledge of mining resources resulted, among other things, in the discovery of new deposits in Hoggar, including the gold deposits of Tirek Amesmessa. The iron deposit of Jebel Ouenza (South-East Constantine), evaluated after prospecting between 1895 and 1901, was the largest and richest iron deposit of its time. Exploited artisanally by the Romans, then industrially since 1913, it still continues to produce iron.
The gold deposits of Tirek Amesmessa (Hoggar massif) were discovered by SONAREM during the 1970-1971 field campaign. Distant 60 km from Tamanrasset, they represent together the largest accumulation of gold known in the country. Their implementation is currently being studied.
