Description
dioecious tree that can reach
10 meters high, with trunk up to 1 m in diameter
covered by a red-brown bark generally breaking off into thin
scales, with pyramidal then irregular cymes. The leaves are linear
shiny dark green above, and dull light green below, scattered,
spread over 2 opposite rows, arranged on a single plane. The flowers of
male feet are in catkins, with 6-15 stamens surrounded by scales
peltate, sub-globose and yellowish; and the flowers of the female feet are
green, solitary with a few imbricate scales. The succulent fruit is
bright red when ripe.
The Yew is a species endemic to Algeria. It is quite rare in the Atlas
Bliden, Akfadou and Djurdjura, and in the Aurès mountains and
Babors. It grows in mountain forests (from 500 to 2500 m)
calcareous and siliceous well-watered, it is often located in
humid ravines in the undergrowth.
The common yew is a species listed on the list of plant species
not cultivated protected (JORADP No. 3 of 10 Safar 1433 corresponding
as of January 4, 2012).
The Yew is a tree of great ornamental interest, protected by legislation
