Description
Sunflower is one of the most important oilseed crops globally due to its high economic and nutritional value. It is one of the main sources of vegetable oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid.
In Algeria, sunflower cultivation is attracting growing interest as a strategic alternative to reduce oil imports and achieve food security, particularly thanks to the abundance of unexploited agricultural land in the steppe and southern regions.
The sunflower is an annual plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is characterized by a robust taproot, a straight, hollow stem, as well as large green leaves with marked veins. It flowers in summer and is known for its ability to follow the movement of the sun during its early stages of growth. It grows ideally at a temperature between 20 and 30°C. It is a relatively drought-resistant plant compared to other crops. Its growing period varies from 90 to 120 days depending on the variety and environmental conditions.
Sunflower cultivation represents a promising strategic choice to strengthen food security in Algeria and reduce dependence on imported vegetable oils. If supported by scientific research, adequate industrial infrastructure and farmer training, it could play a central role in the national agricultural economy.
