Description
A country with mineral wealth, including iron, Algeria is committed to the development of its industrial fabric, a large part of which depends on its mechanical production performance. Even if it is in constant progress, this segment of industrial production requires much more sustained efforts to establish an efficient national industry.
For example, during 1963, 3,800 tonnes of metal packaging were produced, the same figure having been reached in 1962. This stagnation is due to the reorganization of the canned food industry, its main outlet. The measures adopted this year in this area will make it possible to return to the annual level of 5,000 tonnes.
In 1963, the two main metal construction companies produced nearly 10,500 tonnes of structural, boilerwork and locksmith parts, compared to 6,500 tonnes in 1962.
Production capacity is used at 50% and order books mainly come from the builders of the Algiers refinery and the Arzew complex. The outlook for 1964 depends closely on the execution of the national equipment program.
Automobile manufacturing, which employs 1,500 workers, saw growth last year (1963). Renault-Algeria has produced 3,611 automobiles this year, compared to 2,056 in 1962. But this progress remains relative and depends on the volume of sales of passenger vehicles.
The assembly of Renault-Algeria's industrial vehicles began this year 1964. Automobile manufacturing depends on the expansion of sales, which are dependent on several socio-economic factors. The automobile industry invested 800,000 dinars in 1964, while tractor production amounted to 290 units.
The sole manufacturer of trucks and coaches, Berliet-Algérie, is experiencing slow progress with a production capacity estimated at 50%. As for national demand for industrial vehicles, it will essentially depend, for this year 1964, on the reorganization of the transport sector and the increase in public demand for nationally manufactured vehicles.
