Description
The orchid family is represented in Algeria by around thirty species, all terrestrial. They are first of all botanical curiosities, somewhat used in traditional medicine and which may be of horticultural interest.
It should be noted that the entire orchid family is threatened with disappearance from the planet either by the hand of man or by natural phenomena (climate variation, sterility). It is therefore absolutely necessary to take protection and conservation measures.
Ophrys bee Ophrys apifera huds Widespread around the Mediterranean, between 400 and 800 m altitude, this species sometimes reaches up to 50 cm high. Characteristics: long, light carmine or purplish-pink to whitish sepals. Petals of the same color, very small, triangular, horned and hairy, brown trilobed lip with very hairy lateral gibbosities, design with small basal parts formed by two isolated spots. Appendage folded backwards, column with long flexuous beak. Flowering and self-fertilization in April-May, basic soils.
