Description
The Algerian peony is a plant characterized by a straight stem, cylindrical in shape, shiny, measuring between 30 and 60 cm in height. It is generally simple and bears a single flower, although it can rarely be branched. The leaves are very large. The lower leaves are composed of two segments on the stem, each segment consisting of three leaflets, and they are rarely trifoliate. The upper leaves, for their part, are composed of a single segment made up of three leaflets. All leaflets are broad oval in shape. The terminal leaves are carried by long petioles, they are oval or ovate-lanceolate in shape, broad, entire, green, glabrous on the upper side, and hairy on the lower side.

Very large purpurine flowers (8-10 cm in diameter), with 5 unequal ovate-rounded or ovate-lanceolate sepals, with 5-8 oval petals, with stamens fused at the base, with 2-6 free carpels and divaricate follicles, polyspermous and glabrous. Seeds bright red then shiny black.

This species is common in the mountains of Little Kabylia (Babor, Tababort, etc.) and rare in the mountains of Djurdjura and Akfadou.
