Description
Protecting the environment means protecting human beings. Very often man forgets this truth by causing much damage to nature while harming himself. All over the world, disasters suffered by the environment have been costly and have required considerable resources and programs for its protection and safeguarding.
With more than 2 million km2 and 1,200 km of coastline, Algeria presents a wide variety of climates and vegetation, thereby constituting a natural heritage which requires harmonious and coherent safeguarding and development.
Water, forests and soils have been the subject of vast protection and development programs by the State for many years. This effort continues today and increasingly incorporates concerns consistent with the economic and social needs of the country.v
This is how the fight against the encroachment of the desert is intensifying. The green dam, a gigantic work (1,500 km long by 20 km wide), remains the centerpiece of the fight against desertification. Reforestation with fruit and olive species accompanies the development of the steppe to protect the soil, promote the development of forest resources and create new economic promotion zones.
In addition to soil and forests, water, an essential element for human life and work, remains a precious asset to protect and promote. Recovery, capture, irrigation are the main areas of development of our country's water resources to meet the needs of agriculture, industrial activities and the well-being of citizens.
This is how small-scale hydraulics and the creation of hill reservoirs, dams and pumping stations are encouraged by the authorities to allow the preservation of land and the development of new areas, a source of agricultural wealth and essential factors for food independence.
Water and land remain more than ever the most precious capital for a changing society whose needs continue to grow. Environmental protection implies and requires the mobilization of all skills and institutions in the country.
